Hand Made Quality Spearguns

Fuselage

Fuselage is the body of the speargun between the front end (muzzle) and back end (handle). It can be said that the fuselage defines the speargun itself.

Trigger Mechanism

It can be said that the trigger mechanism is the “heart” of a speargun. It is the part that enables a spearo to store and control the energy required to hit a target, by actuating it with a much smaller amount of energy, at an instant.

Handle

A trigger mechanism by itself cannot provide all the required characteristics for a successful shot. Without the right co-operation with the handle, the spearo will not feel the speargun as a continuation of his/her hand.

Mechanical Efficiency

Mechanical efficiency is a term that incorporates the right use of available materials, the quantity and the way they are combined in order to produce an effective assembly. The higher that efficiency is, the more sustainable the design will be.

Benthos Establishment

Benthos Spearguns was established in 2007 by Ilias Pardalis, in Volos, Greece. He completed his degrees in BSc Automotive Engineering and MSc Engineering design and its management in UK by 2006. Specifically, the thesis on his MSc degree was “The design and manufacture of a wooden speargun”, which received a distinction grade…

Benthos Spearguns Facts

Greek National Record in underwater shooting at “Hyper-guns division” (target 6m from the tip of the shaft)- Agrinio 2010.

All speargun components are made in-house by our own tools.

In 2010 Benthos Spearguns sponsored the spearfishing documentary “Dentex- Hunting techniques” by “Underwater Experts”.

Benthos Spearguns underwater shooting team had a lot of success in Greek National Championships, with numerous podium appearances, from 2008 to 2014, the year that wooden spearguns were ruled out from the championships thereafter.

Benthos Spearguns Quality

Benthos Spearguns is devoted to the highest standards of quality. Quality applies to the materials used with high-end techniques realized by skillful workmanship.

The materials selected are teak hardwood of the highest grade and stainless steel appropriate for marine use. This means that blocks of wood are carefully selected, one by one and aged to reach the desired humidity content. This process can take a minimum of six months prior to lamination. After lamination, they sit and wait until they are totally stable to start processing them to form the fuselage. AISI 316 is the stainless steel selected for all the components on the speargun.

It provides more than adequate resistance to rust and mechanical characteristics to support the requirements, especially on the trigger mechanism. But using high end materials without the proper techniques cannot offer long-lasting performance. So, in Benthos Spearguns we incorporated methods that maximize the service life of the speargun. For example, prior to lamination of the wooden stripes that form a block, a surfacing technique is used that increases the surface area of the stripes by 40%. This means that we use 40% more glue that eventually produces a much stronger block to start with. Last but not least, every single operation that is undertaken to complete a Benthos speargun is held by skillful technicians.

Attention to detail is our motto. From the body of the speargun to every single component is treated with extreme care by hand. As a result, there are no visible scratches or un-finished areas wherever you look. The result is mind-blowing even to the untrained eye. This extreme devotion to quality comes at only painstaking work and inspection. If needed, the process is re-done or if not possible it is replaced with an appropriate one. The total hour count to complete a Benthos Spearguns can easily exceed a hundred hours. In special custom orders haw even reached five hundred hours. So, when acquiring a Benthos Speargun you know that a great amount of energy and devotion is behind it.
